To change your legal name in Ohio you must,

  1. File a legal name change petition with your county's probate court

  2. State that you have been a resident of the county for 1 year

  3. Attach a certified copy of your birth certificate

  4. A hearing will be set with a probate judge

  5. Then, you have 30 days to post notice of your name change in a county-wide newspaper

The judge will determine whether or not to grant a name change. The hearing should not require a lawyer. If the judge does not grant the name change order, you may want to consult a lawyer -- find more information on lawyers at Legal Aid.

If the judge grants your name change, you will be presented with a certified and signed order. Keep this safe as you will need it to obtain new or change legal documents.
